The Mahr One Health Lecture by Dr. Dye will examine the Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in Africa and the Andes hantavirus outbreak, two events that highlight how emerging zoonotic viruses can cross species barriers and challenge existing diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics, and public health systems. Together, these outbreaks underscore the importance of the One Health approach, demonstrating that understanding, preventing, and controlling emerging infectious diseases requires the integration of human health, animal reservoirs, environmental factors, disease surveillance, and the rapid development of medical countermeasures.

Dr. Dye serves as the Director of Foundational Sciences at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), where he oversees basic research and the early-stage development of medical countermeasures, including vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics, against high-consequence biological threats and emerging infectious diseases.

As the Department of Defense's premier biodefense research laboratory, USAMRIID is dedicated to protecting military personnel and civilians from biological threats and deadly infectious diseases through cutting-edge research, medical countermeasure development, and scientific innovation.

Dr. Dye has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, holds multiple patents on medical countermeasures, and has received numerous honors, including the Geneva Foundation Research Scientist of the Year Award and induction into the Order of Military Medical Merit. He earned his B.S. from the College of William & Mary and his Ph.D. from Loyola University Chicago.

The One Health Lecture Series was established in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University in honor of Dr. Roger Mahr, DVM Class of 1971
