Veterinary Shortage -
Women Lead the Way

As we all know, veterinarians are in high demand everywhere, but especially in rural areas. It seemed like not too long ago we were arguing about whether we needed to open any new colleges of veterinary medicine. Recently, I was interviewed for an article in Wallace's Farmer related to this issue. This is actually one of a series of articles that I would encourage you to read (https://www.farmprogress.com/business/iowa-faces-challenges-in-veterinary-industry). It discusses more in depth the factors and concerns from both the academic and practice sides of the equation. Dr. Madison Durflinger, who is our newest associate, was also interviewed. She originates from southeast Iowa. Although she is fresh out of school and has a lot to learn, Dr. Madison has a great passion for the profession and always wants to do her best. She has a bright future, and we hope she stays with us for a very long time. More.

Iowa Veterinarians exempt from federal Opioid Training
A new notification on DEA registration applications (new or renewals) indicates that beginning June 27, 2023, a new training requirement has been implemented for requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. Veterinarians are excluded from this training. The AVMA has been working with the DEA on this issue. The DEA will be adding a statement to the notification that says, “This excludes Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and the new applications or renewal applications will not require any action.” If you have any questions, please contact the IVMA office at 515-965-9237.

Veterinarians Required to Obtain Informed Consent from Clients
Making sure that the client knows exactly what tests will be performed, what treatment options are available and what costs and risks are involved in the care of their animals is vital to maintaining a good client relationship and reducing future disagreements. A copy of a suggested form, prepared by IVMA legal counsel, is available for IVMA members to download and use. Click here to obtain a copy.

IVMA Member Survey Results
This summer, the IVMA conducted the 2023 IVMA Member Needs and Satisfaction Survey.  The goals of the survey were to gauge IVMA members’ overall satisfaction with IVMA and to learn how to improve our member services. Also included in the survey were questions asking for suggestions for future programing.  The information obtained in the survey will be used to improve IVMA benefits and services, which will in turn will retain existing members and increase membership. View the results of the survey (member log-in required).
