The Iowa Beef Center will be holding the 2nd Annual Genetic Symposium on December 16-17, 2024 in Ames, Iowa at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center on the Iowa State University campus. IBC Extension specialist Randie Culbertson has planned this event to focus on reproductive technologies for the cow herd.
A combination of hands-on and classroom style learning will be used by the various speakers covering topics that range from maternal indexes to breeding protocols. In addition to reproductive physiologists, economists, and geneticists, producer speakers will also share their experiences implementing modern technology on a regular basis to improve the reproductive success of their herd.
According to Culbertson, “Reproduction is the most economically significant trait to a cow-calf operation. If you want to make genetic improvements, you first have to get your cows pregnant. Understanding the technologies available can help you improve the reproductive efficiency of your herd.”
Attendees will hear from a panel of representatives from AI companies, and a producer panel that focuses on heifer development and reproductive technology use. The keynote speaker for this Symposium will address matching your cow herd to your environment. A fun evening activity includes a mock female auction, after a prime rib dinner prepared by the ISU Meat Lab.
Symposium topics include:
- Current events in reproductive technologies
- Embryo transfer/In vitro fertilization
- Economics of replacement heifers
- Maternal Indexes
- AI Protocols
