Dr. Caitlin Pedati serves as State Medical Director and Epidemiologist. The Medical Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health is a Doctor of Medicine (MD), specializing in public health, who serves as a medical advisor to the department, medical professionals and the public. The doctor is also the state epidemiologist. She grew up in the Northern Virginia area and attended Georgetown University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Sciences and a Certificate in Population Health. She earned her medical doctorate and a master’s degree in public health with a focus on epidemiology through a dual degree program at The George Washington University. Dr. Pedati is a board-certified pediatrician and completed a residency with a certificate in Global Child Health at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. After seeing common health problems among her patients, and driven by a desire to have a broader impact, she joined the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service which, for the first time in her life, took her west of the Mississippi River to Nebraska. She served as a medical epidemiologist for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services prior to joining the Iowa Department of Public Health.

A native Iowan, Dr. Kristen Obbink graduated from Iowa State University in 2006 with a B.S. in Zoology and in 2011 with her DVM.  She obtained her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 2012. After earning her degrees, Dr. Obbink practiced companion animal veterinary medicine.  She was then hired in 2012 to a joint appointment as the FDA Food Emergency Rapid Response Team Coordinator and the Foodborne Epidemiologist for the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. She is currently a veterinary specialist at the Center for Food Security and Public Health, located at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she serves as the university's COVID-19 public health coordinator through 2020 fall semester.

Dr. Ashely Williams, originally from Stanton, attended Iowa State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology in 2007. She went on to obtain her DVM from ISU in 2011.

After graduation she worked at a private small animal practice and an animal shelter in West Des Moines.  Since 2013 she has been working as an associate veterinarian at Creature Comforts Veterinary Hospital in Ankeny. Her primary case load is dogs and cats with a few exotics. Creature Comforts is a busy, progressive hospital that is open seven days a week, making urgent care and emergency appointments the norm for Dr. Williams.

Dr. Lisa Thilges is the owner of Prairie View Animal Hospital. She attended Iowa State University and received her B.S. in Animal Science in 2002 and her DVM from ISU in 2006.

After graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Thilges worked in a 10-doctor practice where she fostered a passion for orthopedic surgery and developed proficiency in ACL repair. She then obtained a position in a smaller, 3-doctor practice in the Chicago suburb of Sugar Grove. She saw many of the orthopedic cases there and developed an interest in pain management, particularly pain associated with arthritis and cancer. After five years in this position, Dr. Thilges moved to Central Iowa to be closer to family and started Prairie View Animal Hospital in Grimes, IA.

Dr. Thilges is a member of Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management.
