History

The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) was founded in 1883. Today we have over 1,600 members representing all aspects of veterinary medicine, including clinical companion animal and production animal veterinarians, researchers, professors and regulatory veterinarians. The IVMA is the only organization in Iowa that represents a broad base of veterinarians. Our mission statement is “Providing a vision and voice through continuing education, publications, legislative and social activities to enhance the veterinary profession, improve animal well-being and defend public health”.

Our governance is provided by a veterinarian from each of 20 districts throughout the state and four officers.

The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association sponsors two continuing education programs per year. These two programs are attended by a total of over 700 veterinarians and 300 support personnel.

The IVMA aids in recruiting excellent students to the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and encourages them to stay in Iowa.
