President's Message

Come Monday

Like each month’s column, center your phone’s photo app over the QR code to take you to a link to this Jimmy Buffett song to listen and “chill” as you read.

First, I must tell you about the BEST part of being your IVMA president. At the very end of May, it is the current president’s honor to administer The Veterinarian’s Oath to the new graduates at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine commencement ceremony. While I am not much of a pomp and circumstance type of person, the grandeur and formality certainly add to the excitement of such a big day. The scenery from the stage, overlooking 150 robed new graduates on one of the biggest days of their lives, is truly inspiring, and made me recall how I felt on that same day almost 4 decades ago. Brucellosis & Tuberculosis Eradication Fund
United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has implemented a rule, effective November 5, 2024, requiring official electronic eartags for certain cattle and bison for interstate travel. During the 2025 session, Iowa legislators voted to eliminate the Brucellosis & Tuberculosis Eradication Fund and the associated programs in Senate File 646. Effective July 1, 2025, Iowa taxpayers will no longer be assessed a property tax levy to support the fund and vaccine reimbursements. IDALS will continue reimbursing Iowa veterinarians for brucellosis vaccinations administered through June 30, 2025. Veterinarians should submit vaccine vouchers to the IDALS by July 31 to receive reimbursement. Costs for brucellosis vaccinations administered on or after July 1, 2025, will not be reimbursed. If you have questions or need assistance submitting your vaccine voucher, please contact Blake Ehler at blake.ehler@iowaagriculture.gov.
