Greetings fellow veterinarians and veterinary technicians!
This will be my last article as I am passing the gavel (although I never got a gavel) to Dr. Shawn Nicholson at the Annual Meeting later this month. I was very concerned when I started down this path that I would not have anything to write about. Then, Winston came along. He has provided me with lots of entertainment and stories to tell. Notice of Amendments to the IVMA Articles of Incorporation
The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association is a corporation governed by Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws.   The Articles of Incorporation can be amended by the vote of two-thirds of the members of the Corporation present and voting at any Annual Meeting.  A summary of the major changes can be found here. The amendments have been reviewed by IVMA legal counsel and approved by the Executive Board.  A vote will take place at the Annual Meeting of the Corporation at lunch on Thursday, September 29 at the IVMA Annual Meeting in Ames.

September is Suicide Prevention Month - QPR classes  
This fall, ISU Extension and Outreach is making a big push to offer multiple Question.Persuade.Refer.(QPR) classes.  QPR is the suicide prevention program that teaches participants how to recognize the warning signs of suicidal thoughts, and how to ask someone whether they are thinking about suicide.  Participants also learn how to persuade someone to get help and how to refer them to appropriate help. ISU Extension and Outreach is offering QPR during September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month, and throughout the fall.  ISU Extension and Outreach will offer virtual QPR classes from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates: Sept. 7, 14, 19, 21 and 28; Oct. 3 and 19; Nov. 2 and 16; and Dec. 14. Private classes for groups of 15-30 participants are also available upon request. Pre-registration is required for all programs. To register, go to
NEW Member Assistance Program (MAP) Offered 
The IVMA is excited to announce a new benefit for IVMA members and their immediate families. Beginning on March 1, a Member Assistance Program (MAP) will be available at no charge to IVMA members and their families. The MAP offers help for personal and/or professional concerns by providing free, confidential, short-term counseling and personal consultation. Additionally, the MAP provides work-life resources for such issues as legal and financial consultations, online learning, and resources. Click here for more information!

Bovine Preconditioning Research Funds Available
The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association announces the availability of grant(s) supporting clinical research in beef cattle. The application guidelines for the Bovine Preconditioning Research Fund Grant can be found at HERE. Proposals must be received by IVMA office by close of business November 15, 2022 and may be sent via email to or mailed to the IVMA office.
