Lori B. Atkins LVT, VTS(ECC)

 

Lori graduated from Northern Virginia Community College with an AAS in Veterinary Technology in 1995 and received certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (Emergency and Critical Care) in November 2000.  

 

She worked at Alexandria Animal Hospital in Virginia for 15 years, serving as a veterinary assistant, Licensed Veterinary Technician, and the Veterinary Technician Training Coordinator.  In 2002, she accepted the position of Small Animal ICU and ER Services Coordinator at Texas A&M. 

 

Lori’s special interests include envenomation, toxicology, trauma, and transfusion medicine.  She has lectured at IVECCS, NAVC, ACVIM and AAHA in addition to many state conferences.  She thoroughly enjoys teaching and having an opportunity to give back to the profession.


Lecture topics: 

Respiratory Patterns and Physiology 
This lecture will focus on the mechanics of normal respiration, recognition of dyspnea, causes of hypoxemia, recognition of abnormal respiratory patterns and assessment of oxygenation and ventilation.

Triage  
This is an interactive lecture utilizing a question and answer format to get participants involved in assessment of patients presenting as emergencies.

 

Blood Transfusion Medicine
This lecture will focus on canine and feline blood types, component therapy, blood product administration and patient monitoring, and transfusion reactions.

Toxicology-Medicine Cabinet Nightmares
Many of us have a variety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs in our homes.  This lecture will focus on several of the drugs that are toxic to our pets and will cover toxicity, symptoms, and treatment of accidental ingestion.

Toxicology-Kitchen Dangers
This lecture will focus on common foods that, while perfectly acceptable for human consumption, can be toxic for pets.
