Satisfying today's consumer with safe and wholesome food seems to be a moving target. The results of the FDA's Milk Residue Sampling Survey could increase the uncertainty about the safety of milk amongst consumers. This talk will cover simple steps that can be taken to minimize violative residues.

9:00 – 9:30 a.m. What You Should Know When the FDA Comes Knocking - Dr. Dyneah Classen

What pig farmers and their veterinarians can expect when a positive drug residue test at a packing plant results in a FDA farm audit.

9:30 – 10:00 a.m. Foreign & Emerging Animal Disease Preparedness & Planning: An Update - Dr. Lisa Becton

The discovery of PEDv in U.S. swine has brought forward concerns with planning and preparedness for emerging and foreign animal disease outbreaks. This session will help participants understand the differences and similarities between each type of outbreak and the progress being made to address them.

10:30 – 11:00 a.m. Update on the Tyson Farm Audit Program - Dr. Kellye Pfalzgraff

One year's worth of on-farm audits have now been completed for the Tyson Farm Check program. We will review the Farm Check program and update on audit findings.

11:00 – 11:30 a.m. The Pork Industry's Commitment To Animal Welfare - Dr. Dallas Hockman

This is an overview of the pork industry's initiative on training, certification, ongoing assessments, and progress toward a compatible industry audit process that:

· Provides stakeholders with a consistent, reliable and verifiable system that assures on-farm animal well-being.

· Eliminates duplication of audits and/or minimizes the administrative burden placed on producers.

· Develops consensus about consistent standards between and among various independent audit programs.

· Creates a standard process that results in inter- and intra- observer consistency and protection of herd health through biosecurity protocol.

11:30 – Noon     Will the Animal Rights Movement Undermine Vets? - Mr. Will Coggin

Will Coggin will analyze the ongoing battle over gestation stalls (individual maternity pens) and tactics used by both sides. He will also discuss the strategy of animal rights activists to undermine the authority and expertise of veterinarians.

3:30 – 4:00 p.m. PED: Disease, Diagnostics & Future Perspectives - Dr. Phil Gauger

This session will provide an overview of the clinical disease associated with PEDV and the diagnostics used to detect, diagnose and conduct surveillance for this costly virus. The session will also include an overview of current research results that have focused on the pathogenesis, transmission, control and complexities associated with PEDV in US swine operations.
