At the Heartland Veterinary Leadership Conference held in Indianapolis in August 2011, a challenge was issued to veterinary leaders from thirteen Midwest states to encourage their members to donate to their local human food pantries. Leaders were asked to track the number of pounds of food donated by members in their states between September 1, 2011 and February 29, 2012.
Together we can make a difference!
Here are the states that reported their contributions:

According to the Global Food Banking Network, hunger affects 925 million people worldwide, including 185 million children. Some families have to make tough decisions each month about housing, medical, and food expenses. As veterinarians, we are all members of our community and to ensure our neighbors can start or end their day with a nutritious meal, the IVMA encourages member VMAs of the Heartland Veterinary Conference to continue to alleviate hunger in their state.
